The Worksite Wellness Program Coordinator Job Series - Getting Started (Seeing The Local

Picture)You are starting to get your worksite wellness program sea legs underneath you. You

have learned a little about the field of wellness, your organization, the industry it is in and

the basics about worksite wellness program   Health And Wellness Tips For winter  development. Now it is time to start bringing the

process a little closer to home.

Clarity of Purpose

It is time to be clear about what senior leaders want and expect from the wellness program.

Essentially, there are three main reasons to establish a worksite wellness program:

• Creating a great place to work

• Increased productivity

• Reducing employee related costs

Clarity of purpose provides needed context. Clarity of purpose also becomes important when it

comes to determining your program's needed infrastructure, programming and interventions. Your

program should be purpose driven.

With the context for your program established, it is time to begin the assessment process. An

organization-wide assessment framed by the context will become the foundation upon which your

overall program will be built. The assessment process will collect data and information at two

levels: the individual and the organization.

Individual Level Assessment

Employee input is critical for the effectiveness and success of your program. Typically, this

occurs through:

• Completion of a health risk assessment of some type

• Completion of biometric screenings

• Completion of a needs and interests survey

• Participation in a focus group and/or laser focused corridor conversations

Keep in mind that these individual assessment strategies are only options and not mandatory.

How you solicit input from your employees should be driven by your circumstances.

You can have an effective and successful worksite wellness program without needing employees to

complete a risk assessment or biometric screening. I ran a large employer worksite wellness

program for several years without having employees complete either a health risk appraisal or

biometric screenings.
